The Juvenile Birder

I Sika Here, I Sika There, I Sika Deer Everywhere! We arrived at RSPB Arne at around 9:00am, getting a lift there by Carl, and being accompanied by Kristian. We immediately made our way to Shipstal Point. As soon as we arrived at Shipstal Point, we scanned through the passing Sandwich Terns . Suddenly, Kris and Carl both called out saying they had a pale-headed tern. It was the Forster's Tern. I desperately tried to get on it but was unsuccessful, and soon enough all the terns flew out to sea. We waited for the Forster's Tern a bit longer, before deciding to come back at low tide for it. We then made our way to Shipstal Hide. Once we arrived at Shipstal Hide, I immediately noticed a lot of flying insects around the branches in front of the hide. I took a photo of them and asked an expert who identified them as Green Longhorns . A species of day-flying micro moth that normally flies in May. Twitching Top Ticks!  Part I Image from David Woodhouse (same bird, but taken on different date) We were offered a trip to see Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, at an undisclosed site, by a birder called Dave (who we had previously met at Easington & Potteric Carr YWT). We set off at 4:30am and arrived at his house at 7:00am and he took us to the bird location at 7:45am. We were ecstatic when we heard the distinctive drumming and travelled towards the noise. After looking in the wrong spot for a bit, we managed to find the correct area and heard the bird close by. We also met a local birder named Rob, who was also looking for these Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. He said it had been drumming for a bit. We walked towards the sound until it was right in front of us. There was a tree that looked like a stake and had multiple holes in it, so I checked it and I spotted just the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker 's head pecking rapidly at the tee.   Owls and Summer Wildlife! (pic taken from webcam) We first visited RSPB Leighton Moss (for location, click 'Bats and Rare Ducks') at 6:00am with nothing in mind. We went to the Grisedale, Causeway and Lower Hide without seeing much. We then went past Lower Hide where we saw a Tawny Owl (year tick). We also saw some swifts (another year tick) at 7:00am on the Causeway. After a quick stop to the saltmarsh where we saw Bar-Tailed Godwits and Mediterranean Gulls, we headed to Foulshaw Moss CWT (location pinned to blog). We went straight towards the Osprey platform, keeping an eye on the boardwalk for lizards and adders as we walked on. We managed to catch a glimpse of an Osprey through a scope as it popped its head out of the nest from time to time, although it was quite a distance away.  Smart-looking Gulls and Mega Rare Bird! We first arrived at RSPB Leighton Moss where we saw Garganey, Eurasian Otters and Pied Avocets. We then met Rob again, from Sizergh Castle, who gave us some details on the Belted Kingfisher in Preston, which we had yet to see. We went there as soon as we got the details but spoke to some birders who said it isn't worth the £10 since its not there. The man, who was named Bob, offered his contact number to alert us when it appears again. We then arrived at WWT Martin Mere at 1:00pm where we saw two Mediterranean Gulls and some more Pied Avocets. Finally, we got a call from Bob and dashed back to Roach Bridge. At first we only saw a Common Kingfisher as it flew upriver and when we followed it, we saw the Belted Kingfisher. We also saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker and managed to slip away from paying the farmer.
